There is the suffering that comes to us by happenstance(involuntary) and then there is that which we choose to endur for reasons of our own(voluntary) in a ceremonial way.

. . . I am coming to see all experience as voluntary & by choice

The thing seems to really be about

. . . Recognizing & accepting

How little we control

My own personal view only on these two issues Kinajin....

free (freely) when you have the choice to do or not to do, a personal choice not forced by external forces

suffer (suffering) when the choice you make brings about some personal loss, hardship or pain either physical or emotional

just MY take on the words

From a sun dance perspective, suffer freely is to sacrifice. Wink

So do dancers really dance for the people?

So do dancers really dance for the people?

The act of offering something in propitiation or homage.

Forfeiture of something highly valued for the sake of one considered to have a greater value or claim.

Something so forfeited.

Relinquishment of something at less than its presumed value.

Something so relinquished.

A loss so sustained.

Baseball A sacrifice hit or sacrifice fly.  Wink

There is only one thing that a dancer has to offer....himself. His own flesh and blood. There is no other gift worthy of this level of sacrifice. The paralel between the crucifixion of christ and a sundancers suffering is not a new one....but is generally put forth by those who are proponents and prosthletisers of christianity.

'Sun Dance' is the 'cool' interpretation, may not be the accurate description.  Most natives or wannabees are learning through the english language, much of which is christian influenced.  "tree dance" maybe?  Its not as cool. Wink Smiley

The tree was taken to where there are no trees.  A friend mentioned seeing pictures of early sun dances where the dance was held out on the plains.  Crow Dogs Paradise is among trees and look whats going on there. lips sealed

Please Kinajin tell me, What is the "Sun Dance" called in your words.

Today it is hard to learn in what we call the United States without learning English, although we may soon be forced to also learn Spanish Shocked  But that in itself is not a reason to abandon the Lakota language.

Christian influence is Strong on almost all reservations. There are some good points in the belief and some that parallel traditional Lakota beliefs, that is the largest reason it was so easily acceptable to the Lakota people. The people could see the positive aspects of Christianity. The problems came when those Christians could not understand Lakota beliefs.

Jesus was respected and honored among Lakota, its the interpretation of religion that screwed it up. Wink
